Maggie Comes To Life
Jun 03, 2025
I spent a number of blog posts sharing a story I'd written about a Mountain Lion (Cougar) named Maggie, and her two young kits, Fiona and Jack. Maggie also had an older son named Gerald, and it wasn't clear how his story was going to end.
He's the one who drew the "men with sticks" away from his mother and saved her life. But did he sacrifice his own, or get away? We don't know. And I don't know, because the story isn't complete in my head. I've written down a great deal, but not the ending. More on that in a little while.
Something exciting happened. A good friend of mine called Chris contacted me and offered to illustrate a children's book, if Maggie and her Kits ever made it to the shelves.
Chris is one of the most talented artists I know. Not only is she a magnificent illustrator, she's done lots of work with leather. You can check out her work on her website, HERE. Amazing, yes?
So Chris is starting to research what would be good parts of the book to illustrate (definitely the kits gazing at the house in the meadow, wanting to help their mother). Here's her first offering to me. This is Gerald, Maggie's older son. She drew him EXACTLY as I envisioned him. What do you think?

I'm so excited to be working on Maggie and Her Kits with Chris. We'll keep you posted as things progress.
But Gerald. What do you think happened to him? His is a story that needs to be told too. He had a rough childhood, losing two siblings and becoming an only kit. When we last saw him, he was being chased by a pack of dogs with GPS systems on them, and they were being followed by men with guns.
Gerald is about three years old, and devoted to his mother.
Does Gerald make it away? Does he sacrifice himself for his mom?
Let me know your thoughts.
